Hi everyone. My name is Enoch Zhu and I have lived in many different places throughout my life. I was born in China, and I moved to the U.S. when I was 10 where my dad pursued his doctorate degree at Baylor University. I have also now lived in four different cities in the states as well as having moved more than 5 times. I attended Martin High School in Arlington, Texas, where I really got to be able to develop and expand my interest and skills in computer science. I’m taking this class as an upper division elective for the computer science degree plan as well as wanting to learn C++, specifically all of the programming language details, such as being able to write operator functions, which I didn’t know was a thing until this week. The first lecture was great, as Professor Downing explained the syllabus and expectations clearly and in detail. I thought the course structure was very well thought out and forward thinking, especially the different scenarios in which to use LLMs and the extent to utilize them to. The collaborative quizzes are very helpful because you can check your answers with your peers and discuss previous class contents to get a refresher. Cold calling definitely helps everyone keep their attention and learn more content.

Like I mentioned earlier, the ability to create operator functions on classes surprised me. Maybe it’s because other languages like Python or Java don’t have this feature, or I just never knew about it. When I learned some basic C++ years ago, I always thought the << and >> operators being used for cout and cin was interesting, but never looked into exactly how it worked underneath. The collaborative quizzes in class helped me refresh the materials learned from previous lectures and helped clear confusions that I had. The programming problem assigned this Wednesday was trivial, so I do not think it made me be under pressure while solving it.
